Shop Until You Drop in Krabi

Shop Until You Drop in Krabi!

We strongly recommend leaving plenty of room inside your suitcase when travelling to Krabi. Otherwise, you risk having to purchase a new one, just to cram in all the goodies that you will more than likely want to bring home.

From souvenirs to highly discounted branded clothing, the Krabi shops and bustling markets have got it all, making shopping a potential full time activity. And if you ever needed an excuse to part with your hard earned cash, then you certainly have one in Krabi – aside from the fact that Krabi products represent excellent value for money, spend in excess of THB 5,000 (approx £100) and you will receive a refund on the VAT when you leave. So, in Krabi it actually pays to shop until you drop!

The emphasis in Krabi is on having a good time, and this approach definitely applies to shopping. Whether it be haggling for a bargain in the local market (which is a sport in itself) or relaxing on a beautiful beach, while the vendors bring their colourful wares to you, it is always a pleasure. It needn’t be a guilty pleasure, either – the Thai Government’s ‘One Tambon, One Product’ scheme directly supports several cottage industries in Krabi, that in turn produce authentic arts and crafts that make delightful souvenirs and unique gifts. These include an intriguing array of hand made goods intricately fashioned from wood, bamboo, cane, ceramics, paper and silk. The craft studios at Klong Haeng for example, specialise in batik work whilst the women’s co-operative at Ban Khao Klom create delightful handicrafts constructed from pineapple leaves.

If you prefer to buy something less traditional and want to stock up on fake designer goods, tacky souvenirs or cheap beachwear, then the small shops and kiosks in Ao Nang and Railay East will easily hit the spot. Hippy hangout Railay also boasts some second hand bookshops if you run out of holiday reading or just fancy a browse amongst a distinctly bohemian crowd.

As already mentioned, bartering at the Krabi markets is an entertaining way to shop and there are plenty to choose from. The lovely night market in Krabi Town is said to be one of the best in Thailand, whilst the day markets are the perfect place to shop for fresh fruit and exotic vegetables, particularly if you are staying in self catering accommodation.

If you are looking for more upmarket shopping facilities, then the Outlet Village just outside Krabi Town more than fits the bill. Here you can pick up a selection of fashionable designer goods and branded sportswear, all at discount prices. Alternatively you can visit the Tesco Lotus Mall, where you can also enjoy a more western style shopping experience. Shoppers here are spoilt with a large range of premier stores, a multiplex cinema and there is even a food court if you want to pause and catch your breath before the next round!
